After hosting a number of international events,
including the Banyuwangi Etno Carnaval and a surfing competition, the
Banyuwangyi administration will hold the first-ever Banyuwangi Batik
Festival from Sept. 26 to 28 to boost the regency’s tourism sector.
Banyuwangi Regent Abdullah Azwar Anas said that the event was also aimed at preserving batik.
“Batik is part of residents’ lives. In the event, there will be an exhibition, fashion shows, batik design competitions and many more,” said Abdullah, adding that the festival would be held every year. “This time, the main theme is the gajah uling batik, which is believed to be the oldest Banyuwangi batik.“
Banyuwangi, Abdullah said, has around 22 batik motifs, including kangkung setingkes, paras empal, alas kobong, kopi pecah, gedegan and moto pitik.
